The whole culture of volunteerism in NYC is much more established here as compared to Singapore.
Today, under the umbrella organization of New York Cares, (www.newyorkcares.com) I signed up for some craft sessions and healthy snack times with kids aged 6-8. It was really fun. You have the rambunctious attention seeker, quiet/shy little kid at the corner, bossy pants type and regular kid-lets. When I first stepped into the elementary school, I was a little taken back by the crazy bouncing kids and sheer volume those small little bodies could churn out! I guess I haven’t been in a closed environment with such large amounts of children for quite some time.
I’m glad I did though, I had fun and this shy little girl came up to me and said oh so cutely, ‘Can you be my buddy? The teacher attached to us was such a natural, so patient, so fun and so good with his children. It’s so wonderful seeing such passion in young people. (I know I sound very old saying this. Boo Hoo!)
Volunteerism is just so easy and organized in this city, the spirit of helping the community and being part of the community at large is a wonderful concept. Someday my country will reach this level of social awareness! (I hope!)
